About Scott Hogsed Day

Wednesday, May 31, 2017
We are excited to have back with us two of our favorite presenters, Jeff Johnson and Gary Jones.  Jeff will be presenting our younger youth with his wonderful dogs and teaching our youth about small game birds.  Gary will be back with our older youth working his taxidermy magic.  We also have the National Guard coming back with the climbing wall and a low ropes course.   So hurry, mark your calender's for August 26 and pre-register now!!
This is our 13th year of putting this wonderful event on.   Look for some great stuff to be given away as well as some new educational booths at the event including some of old booths with some new stuff.  We hope you come out to have a lot of fun and learn some cool stuff about outdoor activities.
The 13th Annual Scott Hogsed Youth Conservation & Education Day will be August 26, 2017.  All youth ages 5-18 are welcome to attend this free event with a parental chaperone.  Pre-register here so we have enough wild game for our free wild game lunch at the end of the event.
The Scott Hogsed Memorial Youth Conservation & Education Day began when some hunters, anglers and youth group leaders, in far Western North Carolina, decided to try and get kids away from video games and television to show them the beauty and opportunities of the outdoors. They decided to hold the free annual event that would showcase a variety of activities, presented by experts, with an emphasis on fun and safety.
Youth Conservation Day was born in 2005 with a special namesake, Scott Hogsed. Scott was an enthusiastic, energetic 14-year-old who spent as much time as he could hunting and fishing. He lost his life in a vehicle accident returning from a camping trip in 1984.
Each year we honor a different youth that loved the outdoors. Whether it was Scott who loved to just be outside hunting, fishing and camping to Justin Nichols who would have rather been fishing then anywhere else, to Nora Starks, who was happiest when she was riding her horse, they all loved being outside enjoying what nature has to offer. In 2015, we honored, Boone Dobbs, a young man that came to every Scott Hogsed Day from the very beginning until he passed 2013. In 2017, the event was dedicated to the memory of Joshua Zalunardo, a 15 year old boy, who lost his battle with a brain stem glioma in 2008.
This year we are honoring, Shannon Christy, extreme kayaker and outdoor enthusiast.  Shannon was from Andrews, NC and love God and everything He created.  She died in 2013, at 23, doing what she loved the most, kayaking.  She love to fish and spend time with her family but most of all kayaking.  She could light up a room with her smile.
As in the past this year is no exception, every kid that attends gets a free t-shirt and a goody bag and a chance to win some great prizes! So make plans to attend and be sure to bring lawn chairs so you can relax and enjoy the shade while the children are out having a great time. Gates open at 7:30 a.m.
Every year for the past 12 years, the Scott Hogsed Memorial Youth Conservation Day has been orchestrated in August by Mr. Sam Hogsed along with Fred Cook and his entire family, for the sole purpose of educating kids on the outdoor activities. This year will be no different. We certainly hope you can attend! Ages 5-18 are welcome to this free event. Register now!!

“TJ Farver, 8, the boy with an infectious laugh, boundless energy, and a tender heart, who brought so much joy to all that knew him.  TJ loved the outdoors, running, swimming, riding his bike, playing baseball, soccer, and playing football with the big kids on the Martins Creek School playground.  He also loved racing, riding his mini bike, going to the flat track late model and sprint car dirt track racing, as well as, watching Nascar.  He loved spending time with his best friends, Gabe McCoy and Roanin Mock and being goofy with his friends and family.”

August 20, 2011 Fundraiser

Monday, August 8, 2011
Come out and help support the Scott Hogsed Youth Conservation and Education Day! Donations to purchase all the items youth receive have been slow to come in this year so we are having a fundraiser to help us raise enough money to help the youth that attend have another great time this year as we have in the past. So join us on August 20, at the Martin's Creek Community Center, beginning at 5:00PM with a BBQ Chicken dinner followed by an auction which will include homemade baked goods, household items, horse items and anything else we might have to auction off. Auctioneer for the evening will be Ivan Hogsed. Auction to begin at 7:00PM. For more information about this fundraiser or to donate items to the auction, please contact Ivan Hogsed at 828-507-0905 or Sam Hogsed at 828-361-2117. Examples of items that this money will go toward are: t-shirts; plates for the lunch; drinks for the event; and of course all the great door prizes that we give away.

Another Successful Youth Day!

Thursday, September 2, 2010
We would like to thank everyone for coming out and making the 6th Annual Scott Hogsed Memorial Youth Conservation & Education day a huge success. To all the volunteers we cannot say enough about the fabulous job you did but for now we will just say, "Thank You". To all the cooks that prepared the food and the servers, the meal was wonderful and your dedication unquestionable. To all the station teachers/volunteers "thank you" for your efforts in bringing knowledge to our youth about outdoor and other activities. "Thank you" also to all our donors, without you we could not keep the event free and give the youth so much to remind them of how much they learned and how much fun they had at this year’s event. Remember, we will start pre-registration June 2011 on this website for next years event. It will be the fourth Saturday in August, which is August 27, 2011. See you next year!!
